CALITZDORP PORT FESTIVAL 2007 The much-anticipated Calitzdorp Port Festival will take place in the eponymous Klein Karoo village from 20 to 22 July 2007. Calitzdorp has long been renowned as the Port Capital of South Africa and source of the finest Ports outside of the wine’s original home in the Douro in Portugal. The Festival will showcase the finest that the village can produce, with a spectrum reaching from value-for-money Rubys and Tawneys, to the multiple award-winning vintage reserve Ports from cellars Axehill, Boplaas, Calitzdorp Kelders, De Krans and Peter Bayly. Features include a Port symposium conducted by the renowned UK negotiant and Marketing Manager for the Symington group in Portugal, Tim Stanley-Clarke, formal and open tastings, cooking-with-Port demonstrations, games, sports, competitions and stalls, as well as open house at all the cellars for the duration of the Festival. An innovation at this year’s Calitzdorp Port Festival is the on-line auction of two remarkable bottles of vintage Port. A custom-produced bottle of wine which holds 54 litres of Ruby Port from the renowned cellars of Boplaas, Calitzdorp Kelders and De Krans, is being auctioned on the Festival website, www.portfees.co.za This out-sized bottle, the biggest ever produced in South Africa, has been hand painted by internationally-famed artist, Marinda Combrink, making the container itself a collectors item. Also on auction, is a single five litre 2006 Reserve Port blend produced and bottled by all six major Calitzdorp cellars, including Axehill, Peter Bayly and TTT Wine Cellar. Some wine experts have called this one of the finest Ports ever produced in Calitzdorp. 75% of the proceeds of both auctions will be donated to a fund for the needy of Calitzdorp administrated by the local Dutch Reformed Church.
